Why you’ll love this recipe
Homemade tenders taste better than frozen and do not need a pot of oil. The air fryer turns oil-misted panko golden and crunchy in about 10 minutes per batch.
- Crunchy with little oil — a light spray is enough.
- Great for a crowd — dinner, game day or an after-school snack.
- Homemade dip included — four-ingredient honey mustard.
Batches, spacing and doneness
An air fryer crisps food by moving hot air around it, so the tenders need room. In a typical 5- to 6-quart basket, about 6 tenders fit in one layer, which is why this recipe cooks in two batches. Tenderloins vary in thickness, so check the thickest one with an instant-read thermometer — 165°F (74°C) is the safe internal temperature for chicken. Golden breading alone does not mean the inside is done.
Ingredient substitutions
| Instead of | You can use |
|---|---|
| Panko | Crushed cornflakes or crushed pork rinds for a low-carb, extra-crunchy coating. |
| All-purpose flour | Cornstarch or a gluten-free flour blend, with gluten-free panko. |

Instructions
Tap a step number to mark it done.
-
Step 1: Season the chicken
Pat the tenders dry and season them with ½ teaspoon salt. If using breasts, cut them into even ¾-inch strips.
-
Step 2: Set up the breading
In one shallow dish, mix the flour, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder and pepper. Beat the eggs with the Dijon in a second dish. Mix the panko, Parmesan and remaining ½ teaspoon salt in a third.
-
Step 3: Bread the tenders
Dredge each tender in the seasoned flour, dip it in egg, then press it firmly into the panko on all sides. Set on a plate or rack.
Tip: Use one hand for the dry dishes and the other for the egg so your fingers do not get coated in breading.
-
Step 4: Air fry in batches
Heat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes. Lightly spray the basket, add tenders in a single layer without touching, and spray the tops with oil. Cook 8–10 minutes, flipping and spraying the other side halfway, until golden and the thickest tender reads 165°F (74°C).
Tip: Spray any dry, white patches of panko. Uncoated crumbs stay pale instead of browning.
-
Step 5: Make the dip
While the tenders cook, stir together the mayonnaise, Dijon, honey and lemon juice.
-
Step 6: Serve
Keep the first batch warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven while the second cooks. Serve hot with honey mustard, ranch or barbecue sauce.

Tips for the best results
- Do not overcrowd the basket. Tenders that touch steam where they meet and stay soft.
- Basket air fryers usually run hotter than oven-style ones; start checking at 7 minutes.
- Avoid aerosol cooking sprays with propellants in nonstick baskets; a refillable oil mister is gentler on the coating.
Storage, reheating and freezing
- Refrigerator
- Refrigerate within 2 hours in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
- Reheating
- Reheat in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 4–6 minutes until crisp and 165°F (74°C). Avoid the microwave, which makes the coating soft.
- Freezing
- Freeze cooked tenders on a tray, then bag them, up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen at 380°F (195°C) for 8–10 minutes until 165°F (74°C).
Frequently asked questions
How long do you cook chicken tenders in the air fryer?
At 400°F (200°C), 8–10 minutes for breaded tenderloins, flipping halfway. Always confirm 165°F (74°C) in the thickest piece.
Why is my breading falling off?
The chicken was wet or the coating was not pressed on firmly. Pat the chicken dry, shake off excess flour, and press the crumbs on with your palm.
Do I need to preheat the air fryer?
It helps. A preheated basket starts browning the bottom right away, so the tenders crisp more evenly.
